Are you looking for a new pet?
We offer a bespoke personal matching service that puts yours and our animal’s needs first.
Who can adopt a Gables dog or cat?
Anyone over 21 years of age can adopt an animal from us – what’s important is matching you and your family with the right animal.
We rehome all our animals on an individual basis as they all have different needs and temperaments. We match our animals to your needs, home and lifestyle.
We are only able to rehome animals in Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Our adoption process
Step 1. Once you have read through our adoption process information please have a look on our dogalogue or catalogue to see if there are any particular animals you would like to be considered for.
Please complete a cat or dog adoption application form (at the end of this page). This enables you to tell us all about your home and lifestyle, as well as more detail about what you are looking for in a new pet. If you prefer to come and see us and apply in person you can visit our reception to complete an application form and talk to our rehoming team.
* Some animals are not featured on our website due to an ongoing court case or legal issues. This is why it is important to complete an application form – even if you don’t see an animal that fits what you are looking for.
* We don’t put all our puppies and kittens on our website so please complete a dog or cat adoption application form to be added to our puppy or kitten waiting list.
Step 2. Our experienced rehoming team will review your application form and look at the animals we have available for adoption.
Step 3. If we have a potential match for you we will call you by telephone for further discussion.
For cats we will send you videos and photos of the potential cat/kittens so you can see what their temperament and character is like. We can then arrange an appointment for you to come in and meet the cat/s if you wish to.
For dogs you may be asked to provide photos or video of your home and a secure, private garden/yard. We would then make an appointment for everyone in the household to come in and meet a potential match. Some dogs may require a few or many visits to build a bond with a potential new owner before going to a new home.
If we don’t have an animal that is a match for you at the time you apply, we will keep your details on file for 3 months and keep looking for any potential matches that may come in. If we don’t find the right animal within three months, we will be in touch to see if you are still looking and if any of your details have changed.
Step 4. If a potential match is successful we will make an appointment for you to come to Gables and complete the necessary adoption paperwork and take your new pet/s home.
Step 5. You will receive ongoing support following adoption.
Why can’t I just come and view the animals and choose one I want?
Along with most other rescue centres we found that over lockdown our animals were much less stressed compared to when we had visitors walking around unaccompanied. This is why we are now closed for ‘viewing’ Click here for further info…..
Why should you choose a Gables cat or dog?
All our animals are:

DOGS
Every dog that comes into Gables has a temperament assessment, carried out by a qualified dog behaviourist, to determine what type of home will be suitable for them.
If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs you will need to complete a dog adoption application form, which asks questions about your home and lifestyle so we can match you to any potential dogs you may be interested in. You can also complete this form if you want to be added to our waiting list for when a suitable dog comes in to our care, if there are none currently suitable.
Some of our dogs may still need help with toilet training and to learn how to be left alone, so need to be matched with someone who has the experience and time for this. Others may not be suitable to live with young children – therefore we may choose to rehome them to a family with older or no children. Some dogs may be fine to live with any age children and other pets so it all depends on the individual dog. As you can imagine these sorts of dogs are very popular so we have a waiting list of people looking for child friendly or cat/dog friendly dogs so please do register with us so we can consider you.
This cost includes a behavioural assessment done by a qualified dog behaviourist, neutering, veterinary health check, microchip, vaccination, flea and worm prevention and a Gables collar and lead.

In some cases the cats in our care are still getting used to human company and may need a quiet home with someone who will to be patient with them. Others may need to be kept indoors – this may mean that they would be ideal for a family with no safe outside space. Many cats and kittens are suitable to live with any age children and other pets so it all depends on the individual cats personality, temperament and experience.
We don’t list kittens available for adoption on our website due to the sheer volume we have in our care and in foster homes. As you can imagine kittens are very popular so we have a waiting list of people looking for kittens so please do register with us so we can consider you.
