Dog and cat adoption

Are you looking for a new pet?

We offer a bespoke personal matching service that puts yours and our animal’s needs first.

Who can adopt a Gables dog or cat?

Anyone over 21 years of age can adopt an animal from us – what’s important is matching you and your family with the right animal.

We rehome all our animals on an individual basis as they all have different needs and temperaments. We match our animals to your needs, home and lifestyle.

We are only able to rehome animals in Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Our adoption process

We appreciate that many people get frustrated with the sometimes lengthy processes followed by genuine rescue centres as they just want a new companion as quickly as possible.

It can be very emotionally damaging to a dog or cat to be passed from home to home, or from rescue to a home and then back to rescue. Therefore, it is vitally important that animals are assessed properly and matched with the right family from the start. This means many happier, settled pets and happy families.

Please scroll down for more information on our dog, followed by our cat, adoption process.

Why should you choose a Gables cat or dog?

All our animals are:

HEALTH CHECKED BY A VET

fully vaccinated

Neutered

TREATED FOR FLEAS & WORMS

Microchipped & Registered

DOG ADOPTION

Every dog that comes into Gables has a temperament assessment, carried out by a qualified dog behaviourist, to determine what type of home will be suitable for them.

Some of our dogs may still need help with toilet training and to learn how to be left alone, so need to be matched with someone who has the experience and time for this. Others may not be suitable to live with young children – therefore we may choose to rehome them to a family with older or no children. Some dogs may be fine to live with any age children and other pets so it all depends on the individual dog. As you can imagine these sorts of dogs are very popular so we have a waiting list of people looking for child friendly or cat/dog friendly dogs so please do register with us so we can consider you.

sadly it is now harder than ever to rehome dogs safely as most of the dogs we take in have difficult behaviours to manage as they haven’t been socialised or have been neglected or intentionally abused.

Therefore, we do have to be careful as a responsible organisation that we don’t put anyone at unnecessary risk.

Step 1.

Have a look on our dogalogue, or visit Gables to speak to our rehoming team and view the folder of dogs looking for homes to see if there are any particular dogs you would like to be considered for. We don’t advertise all puppies on our website and some animals are not featured due to ongoing court cases or legal issues. Therefore it is a good idea to complete an adoption application form so we can consider you for these animals or add you to our puppy waiting list.

Step 2.

If there is a dog you are interested in, or you are open to suggestions if you can’t decide on a particular one, then please complete an adoption application form when convenient to you.

This enables you to tell us all about your home and lifestyle, any previous experience as well as more detail about what you are looking for in a new pet.

Step 3.

Our experienced rehoming team will review your application form and look at the dogs we have available for adoption and give you a call for further discussion, if we have a potential match for you.

If we don’t have a dog that is a match for you at the time you apply, we will keep your details on file for 3 months and keep looking for any potential matches that may come in. If we don’t find the right dog within three months, we will be in touch to see if you are still looking and check if any of your details have changed.

Step 4.

If we have a potential match for you

We will make an appointment for everyone in the household to come in and meet a potential match. Some dogs may require a few or many visits to build a bond with a potential new owner before going to a new home.

If you have an existing dog, we will make an appointment for you to bring your dog to Gables to meet his/her potential new friend on neutral ground. They will be supervised by our experienced and well qualified staff to make sure all goes well.

If all goes well with the meets at Gables, we will arrange a home visit and bring the dog to your home to make sure everyone, including any other pets, are happy and your garden is secure.

Step 5.

If the match is successful, we will make an appointment for you to come to Gables and complete the necessary adoption paperwork and take your new pet/s home.

Post adoption.

You will receive ongoing support following adoption to make sure the adoption is successful, which is very important to Gables and something we are very proud of.

Why can’t I just come and view the animals and choose the one I want?

Along with most other rescue centres we found that over lockdown our animals were much less stressed compared to when we had visitors walking around unaccompanied. This is why we are now closed for ‘viewing’ Click here for further info…..

CAT ADOPTION

We have many cats of all breeds, ages and colours looking for a loving home. All we ask is that you live on a safe road so we can ensure all our cats have a safe and happy life.

In some cases the cats in our care are still getting used to human company and may need a quiet home with someone who will to be patient with them. Others may need to be kept indoors – this may mean that they would be ideal for a family with no safe outside space. Many cats and kittens are suitable to live with any age children and other pets so it all depends on the individual cats personality, temperament and experience.

Step 1.

Have a look on our catalogue, or visit Gables to speak to our rehoming team and view the folder of animals looking for homes to see if there are any particular cats you would like to be considered for. We don’t advertise all kittens on our website and some animals are not featured due to ongoing court cases or legal issues. Therefore it is a good idea to complete an adoption application form so we can consider you for these animals or add you to our kitten waiting list.

Step 2.

If there is a particular cat/s you are interested in, or you are open to suggestions if you can’t decide on a particular one, then please complete an adoption application form when convenient to you.
